Subtle Energy: A Basic Introduction

Energy...Spirit...Awareness...
Intention
Mmm, it is an interesting process to observe. Actually it is a joyful process to watch as it begins to unfold. What you might ask? When I start musing over these things, often I don't quite have the language that best describes what is rolling around in my thoughts. Often these musings occur as pictures or feelings, and language sort of acts as a limitation when I try to describe them .

I think we humans are starting to move toward the reconnection that was lost a long time ago..to rekindle, so to speak the mysteries of the inner world. These mysteries lie in the realm of subtle energy.

As a Reiki teacher and practitioner, I often see amazement in the eyes of those who are just venturing out on this path. They display a keen interest in wanting to know what is going on, they show a deep thirst for understanding, and thus they begin their personal search of re-discovery of that what is already known but buried under the deepness of societal inheritance .

So here are a few thoughts to ponder as you are travelling down that road of rediscovery"

Energy Follows Thought
Where our we focus our will, our attention, our intentions...energy will be attracted to it and follow. If we expect success or failure, health or illness, improvement or worsening, we'll tend to get it. You get what you ask for is not a hollow statement.

Let Me Share an Example:
Scenario #1
I wake up in the morning and make the decision that "this is the best day of my life" and I start to act that way. I hop in the shower, and the water is somewhat cold. "Brrrh, gotta make this one quick today." Get dressed, go down stairs to grab some breakfast.

"Let's see, I feel like cereal and milk." Open the fridge and the milk is empty. "Well, I guess I'll have a banana and mix some of that dry cereal with a little bit of plain yogurt. Wow! I forgot how tasty this combo was, yum! I think I'll put a dash of cinnamon and vanilla as well."

I then get in the car and realize the gas gauge is on empty. "Great! I'm glad I noticed this, I'll have to stop at the gas station to fill up. Thank you Angels for making me realize this, I will be driving on a long isolated stretch of highway today, and if I didn't notice the gauge I could easily have been stranded on the side of the road with no gas!" Again I express gratitude for making me aware, thinking how lucky I am to have the other side helping me, and my day proceeds to be the best yet.

Scenario #2
I wake up in the morning and think, "God, it's only Monday!" I hop in the shower and the water is somewhat cold. "Great! No hot water again!!! It really pisses me off when my girls take 20 minute showers and use up all the hot water, not giving one thought to any one else in the house!"

Get dressed, go down stairs to grab some breakfast. "Let's see, I feel like cereal and milk." Open the fridge and the milk is empty. "It figures! Doesn't anyone around here other than me, know how to dispose of an empty container? Why didn't someone say we were out of milk! Huhhh! Guess that means no breakfast again today!"

I then get in the car and realize the gas gauge is on empty! "OKAY! Great! My day now officially sucks! Now I have to stop to get gas, which is going to make me later than I already am, on top of no breakfast and a cold shower!" Scream out a few %#@&* into the air, start blaming everyone and everything for my day, and proceed to have a very horrific one!

We have all had experiences like those described above. We set the stage and like a magnet, we draw toward us that which we intend. When we remember to choose wisely, it makes the biggest difference in the world.

Energy is Not Good Nor Bad
Energy is natural and neutral. Some people think of 'natural' as 'good', which certainly makes more sense than thinking of it as 'bad', but really it's just natural. Illness/unhappiness is not 'bad energy' that has to be 'got rid of'; but it may be energy that needs to move to a different place or different location, needing to be shifted, or it may be setting the stage for some big opportunity.

Energy Moves
Energy is not static..it is always moving, shifting, changing...when we try to keep things from moving, think what happens! Know a person who is a control nut, always trying to keep things within arms length, tightly guarded and wrapped up in neat little packages? How does that work for them?

Energy Does Not Disappear
Energy does not go away, it doesn't poof and disappear some where never to be seen again. Energy changes form. Energy Is....always!

Energy is Infinite
Viewing life from a culture of scarcity, the basic rule implies there isn't enough to go around. We are often taught to take what we can while it is there, because there may not be enough for us tomorrow. It works on the emotion of fear...lacking enough of what is needed for safety, security, health, etc. I would like to suggest to CANCEL THAT THOUGHT, it's not even remotely true. Working with energy we are working with ABUNDANCE, with PLENTY - which is itself a powerful healing message. To 'give energy' to someone is not to impoverish ourselves; in Reiki, we are an open channel, letting energy flow through us, absorbing what we need as it flows outward to others.

As we work with subtle energy with more awareness, we will develop that intimate connection that provides a "knowing" on a very deep level that spreads well beyond the normal realm of understanding, and into the world of mystery uncovered.

Subtle Energy: A Researcher's Point of View

Below is an article by Paul Von Ward, MPA and M.S., a researcher and writer in the fields of consciousness and frontier science.

"Subtle energy" refers to the medium through which consciousness acts on the realm of matter and energy. According to a National Institutes of Health study, at least 52 terms are used for "subtle energy": chi, prana, holy spirit, manna, ether, orgone, biomagnetism and zeropoint, among many others in our current vocabulary. Regardless of the label, it appears to contribute to many phenomena not currently explained by conventional science: telekinesis, remote sensing, telepathy, gut or heartbased intuition, healing by prayer or other psychic means, biocommunication between species, etc.

Since these phenomena have tangible effects that can be documented but not explained by the known principles of the electromagnetic (E/M) field of matter/energy, they require that we hypothesize another force through which conscious intent acts on the affected objects, senses and cells.

Some researchers believe a fuzzy part of the electromagnetic spectrum, beyond gamma rays, constitutes this force but that it has not yet been discovered due to the lack of refined instrumentation. Just as the harnessing of radio waves and Xrays had to await the development of new technologies, say these researchers, the development of more advanced machines will enable humans to make use of this fuzzy E/M field.

Others, including myself, work on the hypothesis that this force/field exists in correspondence but parallel to the E/M spectrum and may not have the constraints of that spectrum, such as the speed of light. More elaboration on the implications of this hypothesis for theory — David Bohm and other physicists' concepts of nonlocal fields of energy or information — and research — spacebased experiments that challenge the speedoflight limitations on the transfer of information — comes in subsequent articles. Here we focus on the work of one subtle energy researcher: Cleve Backster.

Backster's work in the late '60s and early '70s was an important impetus for the best selling The Secret Life of Plants by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird. In the '80s, his work was chronicled by Robert Stone in The Secret Life of Your Cells.

His research journey started with the 1966 almost accidental rediscovery that plants are sentient and respond to the spontaneous emotions and strongly expressed intentions of relevant humans. (J. Chandra Bose of India had demonstrated a similar principle in the early part of the 20th century.) Using an instrument to measure galvanic skin responses (GSR), a part of his polygraph or lie detector stockintrade, Backster attempted to determine whether it would measure the moment of rehydration of a plant whose roots were freshly watered. It did not but to his surprise, the GSR meter registered his threat to burn the plant leaf when he spontaneously thought of the idea.

(Prior to that experience, Backster was noted as one of the foremost experts in the use and interpretation of the results of the polygraph test. Over the last 30 years he has maintained that reputation, and enhanced it. (In fact, his refinements on previous polygraph techniques have earned him a worldwide reputation; they have been validated by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab.)

His mastery of the theory and practice has benefited thousands of specialists who have participated in or learned from the principles taught in his San Diego based Backster School of Lie Detection. He now serves as an advisor or faculty member for several research and educational institutions. These extraordinary professional credentials are important because the same scientific acumen and experimental rigor are applied to his research (observed by me during several days of lab work with Cleve in February 1998) on what he calls "Primary Perception" and others call "The Backster Effect.")

Subsequent to his accidental discovery, an amazing series of experiments demonstrated that the expression of genuine emotion and intent by humans caused measurable reactions (primary perception) in the cells of leaves, fruits, and vegetables. They also reacted to behaviors or changes in states of animals and insects. Conversely, in what Backster labeled "fainting," plants ceased their normal functioning when horrific treatment (burning, scalding, and chemical destruction) was continued on the parallel materials or when the presence of hostile individuals was introduced into the lab. This reaction seems to correspond to Shock Syndrome in humans. More detailed protocols demonstrated that plants possess some discriminatory capability, making them capable of distinguishing individuals who have either destroyed related plants or have very positive intentions; they seem to know who has the sentiments to become a "green thumb."

Experiments with leukocytes (white cells) indicated that a bond of communication exists between an individual's thoughts/emotions and his cells after they are removed from the donor's body. Backster collects cells from the mouth of a donor through a standard clinical procedure, connects them to the electrodes/meter apparatus, and measures their reactivity to the donor's emotional shifts. These shifts can be caused by the donor's voluntary initiatives or their involuntary reactions to events or images such as observed in photographs or movies. Splitscreen videography of the donor's behaviors and the metered responses of the cell cultures, when other causal or random influences are ruled out, demonstrates some form of communication.

Using a Faraday cage and lead containers to shield the plant, eggs or yogurt used to sense the biocommunication, his experiments appear to rule out the E/M spectrum as the medium of transmission. Tests done with a distance of over three hundred miles between a donor of white cells and the lab indicates the communication bond is not affected by distance. The action and reaction appear to be simultaneous, like the splitpair photon experiments by physicists that show one half of the pair reacts instantaneously to actions taken on the other.

Over the last thirty years literally hundreds of experiments have proved the existence of this biocommunication known as the "Backster Effect." My own personal participation in one of these experiments left me without a doubt that a culture of yogurt in a shielded cage showed extraordinary reactions to feeling that were stirred up in me and two female colleagues as we discussed controversial gender and power issues. Interestingly, the yogurt did not react to periods of intellectual discussion about the same issues; it only became agitated when our comments were charged with emotion.

On the basis of this brief review, two characteristics of "subtle energy" communication are clear:

• It happens only when behaviors, thoughts or talk are based in emotions or serious intent. Words or ideas per se do not elicit a reaction unless they have been energized by some force, such as "subtle energy."

• Some process of prior attunement between the sender and the receiver is necessary for the communication link; some higher level of awareness or, at least, frequency resonation is apparently involved.

While we do yet understand the full nature of the communication involved, nor the qualities of the medium, some implications emerge from Backster's research.

• The demonstration of "subtle energy" communication supports the morphogenic field concept postulated by Rupert Sheldrake and others, where an intent-laden force field is transmitted from some beings to others through an as yet unknown medium.

• The reactions occur at the instant of expression of intent, not when a preset test is administered, thereby requiring a rethinking of scientific protocols related to the replication of experiments in the area of psi research.

• The existence of interspecies communication at this level demonstrates the singular and, apparently, universal nature of consciousness.

• The medium involves the apparent existence of a force that can transfer intentions into changes in the physical realm.

These implications alone lead to new hypotheses and experiments for better understanding of the power of innersense communication, healing prayer, self healing, and the dynamics of interpersonal hostility and attraction. They suggest practices for interbeing openness and protection. Such directions will be explored in more detail in subsequent articles.

Some Principals of Healing to Remember

I always try to review the concept of the healing process in a Reiki class or when seeing clients who come for energy healing. My belief is there is not one magic bullet, healing therapy that works for everyone. Because we are each uniquely vibrating individuals, we each require a unique blend of approaches that are suited to us.

Below is a listing of some very important points I came across listed by David Furlong, which I feel touch upon and summarize wonderfully many of my own personal thoughts, attitudes and beliefs regarding the healing process.

Take a look, feel them out for yourself, and then let me know what you think, I would love to hear your perspective.

THE PRINCIPLES OF HEALING

Any work which involves the intention to assist in bringing about a greater sense of balance and harmony for a person, a place or a situation may be thought of as a healing occupation. The work of therapy, with all its various techniques and practices, has at its heart this intention; and therapists are faced with the challenges that the healing process involves on a number of different levels.

Looking more closely at the process of healing, the work of scientist Dr. Rupert Sheldrake suggests that there are resonances or vibrations in nature that he calls ‘morphogenic’ fields, which permeate all life creating a web of energy that links us together.

Professor Alan Wolf indicated how this process works when he said:
"The fundamental proposition is that everything is vibrating, everything is vibration. If you can vibrate with it, or attune to whatever it is that is vibrating, a resonance is created. Then you have a way of transferring energy back and forth." We can therefore look upon ourselves like radio stations, both broadcasting and receiving information all the time.

This needs to be seen not just in the context of physical energies but at every level: physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Whenever you link with someone else on one or more of these levels, through meeting or just thinking about them, you immediately create the channel for this transfer of energy. Telepathy experiments demonstrate that our thoughts can reach out and connect with another no matter how far away they are.

Science tells us that energy flows from the stronger force to the weaker. It is important to be aware that one of the reasons that you might sometimes feel drained of energy in the company of another is because that persons energies can be very depleted. They can then unconsciously tap into and draw off your energy. This is particularly so of individuals suffering illness.

There are many forms of therapy that work upon balancing energy either through re-adjustment of the flows of energy as in acupuncture or by introducing an energy vibration into the body as in homoeopathy or the Bach flower remedies. Other energy balancing systems include reflexology, radionics, shiatsu and cranial osteopathy.

The work of balancing energies within ourselves will take place to some degree without any conscious intervention on our part. At the physical level, the body goes through a process of continual change and, to support this process, you possess a powerful self-healing mechanism that helps maintain a state of homoeostasis or general equilibrium.

Self-healing processes occurs at a level below normal conscious thought. You do not have to tell your white blood cells to attack a foreign body they do this automatically. 'Psychic' or spiritual healing is a process which acts in a similar way in that an innate knowing at a deep level of your consciousness will draw the right energy pattern to help another. Any therapist can use psychic healing techniques to supplement and enhance other ways of assisting clients: It is very important to learn to trust yourself.

One way of looking at 'psychic' or spiritual healing is to consider that the healer calls upon his or her own self-healing forces and, like a tuning fork broadcasts an energy pattern that can help another individual re-adjust their own balances when, for whatever reason, these have become distorted.

There is no one way to heal for we are all unique and have our own natural balance or matrix of energy. Because of this when opening up to give healing you will naturally be better suited to helping some cases or conditions than others. You need to find the system that best suits you: the only "correct" system of healing is the one that works for you.

Projecting a healing energy is controlled by conscious thought. In this, visualisation and intention play an important part.

One of the most powerful of all healing energies is Love: an energy that harmonises, transforms and protects.

In order not to feel depleted yourself it is very important that you learn to channel energies from outside of yourself. This will also amplify and considerably expands your natural range of frequencies. For example, calling upon or linking oneself to the principle of "Love", the love of God, Christ, Allah, the Creator or whatever name or symbol you wish to think of, will draw a much greater potency of energy than you could naturally harness on your own. This quality of the purest form of Love is not then 'muddied' or diluted by other feelings which we as individuals may have towards our clients. These forces can be brought to bear to assist others recover their equilibrium.

Remember that healing is an offering, like leading a horse to water, you cannot and should not try to make it drink, for we each have our own path to tread. For some this may mean experiencing disease and suffering as they reject those aspects that try to remove the symptoms. In practice, though, very few people reject healing completely.

Arm Deep in Adventure

MY REIKI STORY
Welcome to my adventure in healing. For a long time, I have been on the opposite side of the fence: pain free, energetic, unstoppable in doing what I have wanted to do. Often working with others who are not feeling pain free, energetic nor doing what they want to do because of a challenge they have been experiencing. Well, since I have now, jumped to the other side, I thought, maybe I should chronicle this adventure. Hopefully it will be a short one, a post or two, then faded away into memory.

So why not join me in Arm Deep in Adventure! People invariably make the mistake that if you work in the holistic field, you are always a vibrant picture of health, and I would like to dispel that myth--it couldn't be further from the truth, especially today.

Monday Morning...4/7/08
As I sit here this morning in excruciating pain, I figured maybe I should chronicle the adventure. I have been healthy and pain free for so long, it feels so unusual to be in this condition.

The awareness of this adventure began a few nights ago. I was laying on the sofa watching TV and feel asleep. When I woke up I noticed an ache in my right shoulder, upper back, and upper arm...the type that you get when you sleep on your side for too long. I got up, went to bed, and assumed it would be gone in the morning.

Wrong! Next morning, the ache was still there, noticeable but bearable, able to continue my normal activities. This continued for a few days. Fast forward to Sunday, mid afternoon. For the past few days I have been working with the pain, but not really consciously. As I am doing other things, I'm also doing some Reiki with crystal work. The pain subsides a bit but then returns. Hello! I should know better, pay better attention before it blows up to more than I wish to experience.

Suddenly the annoying, nagging, bearable pain is not getting its message across so it notches it but a bit, well...actually quite a lot. Ok! Now I listening:throbbing pain from the right shoulder blade area, moving up and around into the shoulder/arm ball and socket, going down outside of the arm, through the elbow, into the wrist, and then over to the thumb.

OUCH! OUCH! OUCH! The pain on a scale of 1 -10 is a 14+. As I move my arm around I notice more pain. Then I try to reach up to grab something and yikees! Searing pain...I could not lift my arm up. Hummm. Now what's going on!

All this adventure has driven me to the couch for recovery. Let's see...we will start with Reiki, do a cold pressed castor oil treatment and then add in some meditation. The pain from afternoon, through evening, through late night, becomes progressively worse.

My daughter was returning from a school sponsored trip for a national competition and was due to arrive back at school at 1:00 AM. How would I ever be awake to pick her up? No problem!

The first recognized gift of my pain...keeping me awake so I not miss the call to go get her. The only problem was trying to put my coat on. Driving was a bit challenging as well when I had to shift gears.

Came home, went to bed... lathered in Tiger Balm...woke my husband to help me get undressed..took 2 pain relievers... which I normally never do... slipped a Slim Spurling ring around my shoulder and prepared for sleep. Well actually. prepared to lay in bed, fading in and out of light sleep...more out than in.

Woke up. Okay enough of this! Called my friend Kim who is an awesome energy healer and booked an appointment with her. Called my chiropractor, my first line of defense when I think I may need an extra boost of outside help, and set that appointment.

Then received a phone message from another friend asking for the number of my chiropractor, she has this terrible pain, running down her arm and she is ready to gnaw her arm off. Hmmm! I called her...our symptoms are similar...hers on the left, mine on the right...but we chuckled as we described the last few days of our attempts at healing ourselves...Misery loves company.
Be sure to check back later to see how I have made out at my appointments. I am also getting ready to go in deeper and do the soul searching connection work, for there is where the key to recovery lies!

Healing Begins...Evening 4/7/08
Well I saw my energy healer friend. She assessed where my energy was not flowing optimally, she did her magic and got my energy opened up. By the time I left working with Kim, my right arm could be elevated to chest height with less pain and I could begin to move it in slight motions side to side. The pain was still present but much reduced in intensity. On a scale of 1-10, I would say I was at about a 6 when I left, a very significant drop from the early morning rating of 14+.

Next stop--the chiropractor. Her assessment--frozen shoulder--a little lit of this, a little bit of that...she worked her magic and I scheduled another appointment for Wednesday morning. She felt it would take 2-3 days before I would start to feel myself again. The pain remained about the same at about a 6.

A few hours later...the real magic kicked in...the frozen shoulder began to thaw, the arm could be elevated without any pain to chest level, tender spots were relaxing, and my energy level has returned. Yipee! Now that did not take too long... Am supposed to put a moist heating pad on it as frequently as needed, but have not needed to do so tonight.

So the day ends with a pain rating of a 2. Wow, pretty amazing! Had I gone a more traditional route, it would have looked more like...visit...off for some tests..handed a script for pain...see you in a week or so...oh, and by the way, what was your number, opps, I mean name?

Now I am off to bed, even through I am on the road to recovery, I think I will still tuck my self in with some tiger balm to keep the process working. Nite!

Tuesday, April 8, 2008
Well, I slept through the night comfortably and woke up this morning feeling full of energy! Hopped into the shower. Amazing! I can now wash my hair with 2 hands, really made me think about what I couldn't do when in pain. There is a wee bit of tenderness at the shoulder when touched, but other than that, my arm goes straight above my head with no pain.

Now my chiropractor said 2-3 days before I would be feeling normal again, but I hadn't mentioned I went to my friend the energy worker before her appointment. With Kim getting that Ki moving around, things then had a chance to rebalance alot quicker. This is one of the reasons why we say Reiki combines so well with other modalities to help with the healing process.

So this little experience brought up several things for me to look at once again:

When my body whispers, pay attention...don't wait for the screams

What parts of my life have I placed into deep freeze that need to be thawed out to move on?

I knew I was having problems staying grounded, pain brings an end to that right away, so what other ways can I choose to be more in my body that are joyfully?

When fully anchored in the moment, it is easy to feel gratitude for the simple things I take for granted, such as having two hands to wash my hair, putting on my coat without asking for help, driving my car and shifting without creating tears of pain, etc

Keep your appointment with the chiropractor, don't cancel just because you feel better, continue to work on the healing.

Guess this is the end of this leg of the journey, but the trip continues. Hopefully, these learnings will continue to have a strong impact and I won't slip back into a state of forgetfulness.

The Science Behind Reiki

WHAT HAPPENS IN A TREATMENT?
Independent research by Dr. Robert Becker and Dr. John Zimmerman during the 1980's investigated what happens while people practice therapies like Reiki. They found that not only do the brain wave patterns of practitioner and receiver become synchronised in the alpha state, characteristic of deep relaxation and meditation, but they pulse in unison with the earth's magnetic field, known as the Schuman Resonance. During these moments, the biomagnetic field of the practitioners' hands is at least 1000 times greater than normal, and not as a result of internal body current.

Toni Bunnell (1997) suggests that the linking of energy fields between practitioner and earth allows the practitioner to draw on the 'infinite energy source' or 'universal energy field' via the Schuman Resonance. Prof. Paul Davies and Dr. John Gribben in The Matter Myth (1991), discuss the quantum physics view of a 'living universe' in which everything is connected in a 'living web of interdependence'. All of this supports the subjective experience of 'oneness' and 'expanded consciousness' related by those who regularly receive or self-treat with Reiki

Zimmerman (1990) in the USA and Seto (1992) in Japan further investigated the large pulsating biomagnetic field that is emitted from the hands of energy practitioners while they work. They discovered that the pulses are in the same frequencies as brain waves, and sweep up and down from 0.3 - 30 Hz, focusing mostly in 7 - 8 Hz, alpha state. Independent medical research has shown that this range of frequencies will stimulate healing in the body, with specific frequencies being suitable for different tissues. For example, 2 Hz encourages nerve regeneration, 7Hz bone growth, 10Hz ligament mending, and 15 Hz capillary formation.

Physiotherapy equipment based on these principles has been designed to aid soft tissue regeneration, and ultra sound technology is commonly used to clear clogged arteries and disintegrate kidney stones. Also, it has been known for many years that placing an electrical coil around a fracture that refuses to mend will stimulate bone growth and repair.

Becker explains that 'brain waves' are not confined to the brain but travel throughout the body via the perineural system, the sheaths of connective tissue surrounding all nerves. During treatment, these waves begin as relatively weak pulses in the thalamus of the practitioner's brain, and gather cumulative strength as they flow to the peripheral nerves of the body including the hands. The same effect is mirrored in the person receiving treatment, and Becker suggests that it is this system more than any other, that regulates injury repair and system rebalance. This highlights one of the special features of Reiki (and similar therapies) - that both practitioner and client receive the benefits of a treatment, which makes it very efficient.

It is interesting to note that Dr. Becker carried out his study on world-wide array of cross-cultural subjects, and no matter what their belief systems or customs, or how opposed to each other their customs were, all tested the same. Part of Reiki's growing popularity is that it does not impose a set of beliefs, and can therefore be used by people of any background and faith, or none at all. This neutrality makes it particularly appropriate to a medical or prison setting.

Comment from Reiki Retreat:
What really drew my attention to this article was that the study was conducted by Dr. Robert Becker, one of the leading authorities on topics related to geopathic stress and EMFs. Just this week I received the book I ordered by Dr. Becker entitled The Body Electric, which had been on my list for a few years, but I neglected to get around to it. Since this is my 3rd encounter with Dr. Robert Becker's work in less than one week, I guess I need to pay attention to the message the universe is sending and get moving on reading the book.

I find the information in this article fascinating! When giving a Reiki session to another individual, frequently what occures is the receipant and I will have the same insightful information coming to us during the session. When this happens, I am always in awe, thinking of the million thoughts, or images which could possibly be created, and ask how did both of us zero in on the same one? This article begins to provide me with some of the reasons why this happens.

I hope some of you Reiki practitioners who may be reading this will jump in and share you thoughts on this topic

Reiki to the Rescue: Reviving Depleted Batteries

REIKI STORY...
When I was taking my Level I Reiki class, I can remember my teacher mentioning as an aside, "Oh, yes and by the way, you can Reiki batteries also." I also remember thinking, "Ok, I was with you-- until now. Don't try to sell me some hocus pocus magic tricks."

All along, what I was being taught seemed reasonable, even though the name Reiki was kind of weird sounding, the ideas made sense on some level to me. And besides, I was only there taking this class so I could continue to do Polarity work without being energetically drained myself. Wrong! Just when I think I have it all figured out, the universe throws me a curve ball.

My teacher continued very matter-of-factly explaining, if you have a battery that has died but has not been sitting in a drawer dead for some time, you can Reiki it and it will revive itself, enough that you will not need to immediately replace the battery. "Yep! Sure! No problem! Watch out Energizer Bunny, I'm looking to take over your job" I'm thinking, holding the laughter in as she was speaking, not wanting to be disrespectful.

Well it just so happened that a few days after this class I was getting ready to prepare dinner and my daughter was doing homework. She came into the room and said, "Mom, my spellchecker just died, you need to go out and get me a new battery." Well my ears perked up on that one. Acting very confidently I said, "give me that battery". I sat down on the couch, put the battery between my hands, activated the Reiki energy, and kept one eye on the kitchen clock.

One minute passed...what am I doing? Am I nuts? Two minutes passed...I feel so stupid!...Three minutes passed...humm, I wonder how long I should hold this battery? Four minutes passed...what's that I feel? Five minutes passed...now it's cooking. Six minutes passed...well, she should be fired up by now.

Very gingerly, I handed the spellchecker battery over to my daughter, waiting for the ridicule that would come, after she put it back into the device and it wouldn't turn on. In goes the battery, "Thanks Mom, it's working!" Whew! I'll tell you, I slumped back in my seat and thought- it can't be true. Then I thought, well I'm sure it won't last. Wrong again, it was several weeks later before I had to actually go out and replace that battery, which totally amazed me.

Shortly after that, I was in the store, and at the time, you could purchase a battery pack with a test strip on the side to see how much energy was in the battery. I would use that to experiment with, giving Reiki to depleted batteries and watching them be re-energized. Each time it would happen, it would still amaze me. Unfortunately I can't find those test strips anymore. But I am beyond needing some demonstration of proof in that manner.

I have a relatively old digital camera by today's standards. It takes two AA batteries which have to be replaced frequently. I would always carry extras around with me, but I no longer need to. There have been quite a few times when I have wanted to take pictures and there are no replacement batteries close at hand, I just take the ones out of the camera, and Reiki them for a few minutes, pop them back into the camera, and I am good to go.

Still, even though I have done this on numerous occasions, I was still have a hard time accepting this was actually happening. Then one day, I had one of those hit yourself on the side of the head type of epiphany's...duh, we are acting just like a set of jumper cables. Our bodies are electrical systems that have life force energy flowing through them, therefore when we hold the depleted batteries we are essentially doing what a full battery does for a dead one when hooked up to the cables--we are giving them a jump. Once I was able to make that connection, I couldn't believe I hadn't made that deduction a lot sooner. So now as I teach my Level I Reiki class, as my teacher had done many years before, I mention to my students, "Oh, yes, and by the way, you can Reiki batteries too." That look I get is one I can identify with. I laugh, and tell them my story...The Day the Battery Died.

Energy Technique Toolbox: Tip 7

EXERCISE: SEEING THE AURA

This exercise is designed to help you see Auras. It is really a very simple task, that takes less than 1 minute to see in the right conditions. Once you are able to do this, it then requires regular practice to become competent at seeing the auric field, even in a less than ideal environment.

Choosing good conditions in which to practice is important- you are not only able to see the Aura better, but it also helps you to gain confidence about what you see.

Have a person sit in a chair with their back to a clear white wall, that is softly illuminated. A color background will change Aura colors, so you need additional knowledge about combining colors. Some combinations of background and Aura colors may cause misinterpretation. You can play around with adjusting the light. Some prefer a dimmer light in the room, others find it more helpful to have a brighter light. Experience it a variety of ways to determine what works best for you.

Then stand back or sit in a chair facing the person whose aura you are looking at, be at least a few feet away. Then focus your eyes about 12 - 18 inches above the head of the individual. Maintain what I call a fuzzy-focus state with your eyes. It is how my eyes are usually when I am daydreaming. When you can look in this manner, suddenly the aura appears. It is then natural for your brain to signal to you "Oh Boy, you have just seen an Aura", but as soon as you divert full attention and focus to that spot, you lose what you saw and you have to start over again.

It is really not that difficult... in summary it is learning to direct the ego self to go to the back of the room so the process can work. Once you know you have the ability to see the auric field, then it is quite simply PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! if you want to develop this skill.

To see your own Aura, so the same thing but look into a mirror. This can be a bit more challenging to start with, but as with anything new your are learning, the more you practice, the easier it gets.

Initially when you see the Auric field, it may appear to you as a hazy, fog-like state. Think about driving at night and you look up at the street light, that haziness you see surrounding the light is similar to what you will see as an aura. Over time you will be able to see colors, if you are unable to see them when you first start. My feeling is the more you can relax into the process, the more you will be able to observe.

Practicing this new technique can be fun. You don't necessarily need to set aside x amount of time each day in your newly created AURA Practicing Space, but rather--play with it, have fun. If you are standing in line at the store, rather than getting annoyed, practice Aura viewing. Waiting in an office for your number to be called? Instead of reading a magazine--practice Aura viewing. As you see individuals in various states of emotion, if you can be a detached observer--practice Aura viewing. The opportunities are endless! Have fun learning. PS: Let me know if you give this a try and how you make out!

Colors of the Aura

WORKING WITH OTHERS

The meanings of the aura colors may vary a bit from each modality and practitioner. Below is a general guideline that you can use to interpret the state of an energy field you may be seeing. These guidelines are simply summaies and not indepth information. If you wish to learn more, I would suggest researching color therapy.

RED AURA COLOR:
Relates to the physical body, heart or circulation. The densest color, it creates the most friction. Friction attracts or repels; money worries or obsessions; anger or unforgiveness; anxiety or nervousness. Materialistic thoughts, thoughts about the physical body. Predominantly red Aura indicates materialistically oriented person.

ORANGE AURA COLOR:
Relates to reproductive organs and emotions. The color of vitality, vigor, good health and excitement. Lots of energy and stamina, creative, productive, adventurous, courageous, outgoing social nature; currently experiencing stress related to apetites and addictions. Uplifting and absorbing. Inspiring. A sign of power. Ability and/or desire to control people. When orange becomes a strong point, it usually contributes to a yellow halo, which then becomes gold, indicating not only a spiritual teacher, but a powerful spiritual teacher, someone capable of demonstrating his/her unique abilities. Orange thought is a thought about exercising power or a desire to control people

YELLOW AURA COLOR:
Relates to the spleen and life energy. It is the color of awakening, inspiration, intelligence and action shared, creative, playful, optimistic, easy-going. Yellow halo around the head: high spiritual development.

A signature of a spiritual teacher. Do not accept spiritual teachings from anyone who does not have such a yellow halo. Buddha and Christ had yellow halos extending to their arms. Today it is rare on Earth to find a person with a halo larger than 1 inch. Yellow halo appears as a result of a highly active brow chakra (which can be seen glowing with violet by many people at my workshops). Highly spiritual people stimulate the brow chakra continuously for many years, because they always have intensive spiritual thoughts in their minds. When this chakra is observed when highly active, a yellow (Auric pair) halo appears around it, surrounding the entire head. Yellow thought indicates a moment of joy and contentment.

GREEN AURA COLOR:
Relates to heart and lungs. It is a very comfortable, healthy color of nature. When seen in the aura this usually represents growth and balance, and most of all, something that leads to change. Love of people, animals, nature; teacher; social. People with a green strong point in their Auras are natural healers. The stronger the green Aura, the better the healer. They also love gardening and usually have a "green hand" - anything grows for them. Being in a presence of a person with a strong and green Aura is a very peaceful and restful experience. Green thought indicates a restful state and healing.

PINK AURA COLOR
Pink Aura indicates that the person achieved a perfect balance between spiritual awareness and the material existence. The most advanced people have not only a yellow halo around the head (a permanent strong point in the Aura) but also a large pink Aura extending further away. The pink color in the Aura is quite rare on Earth and appears only as a temporary thought, never as a strong point in the Aura.

BLUE AURA COLOR:
Relates to the throat, thyroid. Cool, calm, and collected. Caring, loving, love to help others, sensitive, intuitive. Balanced existence, sustaining life, eased nerve system, transmitting forces and energy. People with blue strong point in their Aura are relaxed, balanced and feel ready to live in a cave and survive. They are born survivors. Blue thought is a thought about relaxing the nerve system to achieve the balance of the mind or a thought about surviving. Electric blue can override any other color in the Aura, when the person is receiving and/or transmitting information in a telepathic communication

TURQUOISE AURA COLOR:
This color indicates dynamic quality of being, highly energized personality, capable of projection, influencing other people. People with a turquoise strong point in their Aura can do many things simultaneously and are good organizers. They feel bored when forced to concentrate on one thing. People love bosses with turquoise Auras, because such bosses explain their goals and influence their team rather than demand executing their commands. Turquoise thought is a thought about organizing and influencing others.

INDIGO AURA COLOR:
Relates to the third eye, visual and pituitary gland. Intuitive, sensitive, deep feeling.

VIOLET AURA COLOR:
Relates to crown, pineal gland and nervous system. The most sensitive and wisest of colors. This is the intuitive color in the aura, and reveals psychic power of attunement with self. Intuitive, visionary, futuristic, idealistic, artistic, magical. indicates spiritual thoughts. Violet is never a strong point in the Aura. It appears only as temporary "clouds" and "flames", indicating truly spiritual thoughts.

LAVENDER AURA COLOR:
Imagination, visionary, daydreamer, etheric.

SILVER AURA COLOR:
This is the color of abundance, both spiritual and physical. Lots of bright silver can reflect to plenty of money, and/or awakening of the cosmic mind.

GOLD AURA COLOR:
The color of enlightenment and divine protection. When seen within the aura, it says that the person is being guided by their highest good. It is divine guidance. Protection, wisdom, inner knowledge, spiritual mind, intuitive thinker.

BLACK AURA COLOR:
Draws or pulls energy to it and in so doing, transforms it. It captures light and consumes it. Usually indicates long-term unforgiveness (toward others or another) collected in a specific area of the body, which can lead to health problems; also, entitities within a person's aura, chakras, or body; past life hurts; unreleased grief from abortions if it appears in the ovaries

WHITE AURA COLOR:
Reflects other energy. A pure state of light. Often represents a new, not yet designated energy in the aura. Spiritual, etheric and non-physical qualities, transcendent, higher dimensions. Purity and truth; angelic qualities. White sparkles or flashes of white light: angels are nearby; can indicate that the person is pregnant or will be soon
In individuals who are ill or sick, several hours before the death, the Aura becomes white, and greatly increases in intensity. For this reason in most cultures "death" is depicted in WHITE (not black), because in the past, people could actually see a white Aura before death. It seems that our ancestors knew much more than we are prepared to admit.

EARTH AURA COLORS:
Soil, wood, mineral, plant. These colors display a love of the Earth, of being grounded and is seen in those who live and work on the outdoors....construction, farming, etc. These colors are important and are a good sign.

RAINBOWS:
Rainbow-colored stripes, sticking out like sunbeams from the hand, head or body: A Reiki healer, or a starperson (someone who is in the first incarnation on Earth)

PASTELS:
A sensitive blend of light and color, more so than basic colors. Shows sensitivity and a need for serenity.

DIRTY BROWN OVERLAY:
Holding on to energies. Insecurity.

DIRTY GRAY OVERLY:
Blocking energies. Guardedness.
